New Book by Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author David McCullough About American Pioneers to be Published by Simon & Schuster

New York, NY, October 6, 2016—Simon & Schuster will publish David McCullough’s new book, The Pioneers, in 2019. The Pioneers is the story of the courageous first settlers of the great Northwest Territory, a vast American wilderness to which the Ohio River was the gateway and where education was available to all and slavery was prohibited. Jonathan Karp, President and Publisher, and Bob Bender, Vice President and Executive Editor, of Simon & Schuster acquired world, audio and first serial rights from Mort Janklow of Janklow & Nesbit Associates.

“Simon & Schuster has been proud to publish David McCullough’s work for more than fifty years, and we are delighted to be adding another American epic to our David McCullough library,” says Jonathan Karp. “The Pioneers is in the tradition of classics like The Great Bridge and 1776, for its portrait of unsung American heroes engaged in a great adventure that shaped our history. In this case, the story is told through three generations of an extraordinary family that explored and settled the frontier.”

David McCullough has twice received the Pulitzer Prize, for Truman and John Adams, and twice received the National Book Award, for The Path Between the Seas and Mornings on Horseback. His other widely acclaimed books are The Wright Brothers, 1776, The Greater Journey, Brave Companions, The Great Bridge, and The Johnstown Flood. All told, there are more than 10 million copies of his books in print. He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the National Book Foundation Distinguished Contribution to American Letters Award, the Francis Parkman Prize (which he won twice), the Los Angeles Times Book Award, the National Humanities Medal, the French Legion of Honor, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, our nation’s highest civilian award.  He has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, as well as the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and has received more than fifty honorary degrees.
