Simon & Schuster to Publish Brad Stone’s New Book on Amazon

NEW YORK, March 14—Simon & Schuster will publish bestselling author and renowned journalist Brad Stone’s AMAZON UNBOUND, it was announced today. Publication date is scheduled for fall 2021.

In 2013 Stone published The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon, which chronicled the company’s ascension from fledging startup to one of the most successful retailers of all time. A New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller, the book received rapturous reviews and won the 2013 Financial Times/Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Award.

AMAZON UNBOUND will pick up where The Everything Store left off. Much has changed in the past six years. The world has been introduced to Alexa, which reshaped the way we interact with technology. Jeff Bezos has become the richest person on the planet and the subject of intense interest from the tabloids, while Amazon has become more than just a retailer, impacting fields as varied as AI, cloud computing, the grocery business, film and TV, and more. Amazon’s expansion into China and India has made the company into a truly global force to be reckoned with. With characteristic rigor, insight and wit, Stone will explore the company’s ongoing successes and failures and deconstruct its strategies for growth, and in doing so pose the ultimate question: Is Amazon good for us?

“The rise of Amazon, and of its inventive founder, Jeff Bezos, is hands-down the most compelling business story of our time,” said Stone. “Over the last few years, I’ve come to realize that my first book explored only the first few chapters of this historic story. Now I want to chronicle how the everything store became the everything company.”

“There’s no company more influential than Amazon in our lives,” said Stephanie Frerich, Executive Editor at Simon & Schuster. “There’s no one who knows the story better and is more qualified to tell it than Brad Stone.”

Stone is the author, most recently, of The Upstarts: Uber, Airbnb, and the Battle for the New Silicon Valley. He is senior executive editor for technology at Bloomberg News, where he oversees a team of 50 reporters and editors that cover high-tech companies, startups and internet trends around the world. He was previously a senior editor with Bloomberg Businessweek, where he authored more than two dozen of cover stories on companies such as Apple, Google, Twitter, Facebook and Yahoo, as well as the Chinese internet juggernauts Didi, Tencent and Baidu. Prior to joining Bloomberg Businessweek, Stone was a reporter with the New York Times.

World rights were acquired by Stephanie Frerich from Pilar Queen at McCormick Literary. Rights have already been sold in the UK, Brazil, Italy, and the Netherlands. The book will also be published by Simon & Schuster’s international companies in Australia, Canada, India, and the United Kingdom, and in audiobook by Simon & Schuster Audio.
