Threshold Editions to Publish Donald Rumsfeld’s Memoir of Gerald Ford

NEW YORK, December 6 —Threshold Editions will publish Donald Rumsfeld’s personal and political memoir of his time in President Gerald Ford’s administration, When the Center Held: Gerald Ford and the Rescue of the American Presidency, it was announced today. The book is scheduled to be published in May 2018.

A #1 New York Times bestselling author and a political mainstay for five decades, Donald Rumsfeld served as both Secretary of Defense and Chief of Staff to President Ford. Rumsfeld provides a sweeping examination of Ford’s three years in office in the wake of the Watergate Scandal, years marked by resentment over Ford’s pardon of Nixon, the rise of Ronald Reagan, the fall of Saigon, and Ford’s devastating loss to Jimmy Carter. Throughout, as Rumsfeld recounts, Ford’s honesty, integrity, and kindness prevailed, and the center did indeed hold.

A rare and fascinating look behind the closed doors of the Oval Office, When the Center Held will include never-before-seen photos, memos, and anecdotes from a unique insider’s perspective.

“I’m looking forward to telling the largely unknown story about the Gerald Ford presidency and the crucial role it played in righting our republic during a time of unprecedented division,” says Rumsfeld. “Gerald Ford was not only my president, but my personal friend of more than 40 years. His story offers reassurance that America has leaders who can rise to the challenge when we most need them.”

Mitchell Ivers, Vice President and Editorial Director of Threshold Editions, acquired world English rights from Keith Urbahn and Matt Latimer of the Javelin Agency.

“Donald Rumsfeld depicts his friend and colleague Gerald Ford as a man who never desired or ran for the office of president or vice president,” Ivers said, “yet somehow stepped in and healed an angry and divided nation. It is a moving story with an inspiring message for today.”
