TOUCHSTONE
TO PUBLISH THE U.K.’S HILARIOUS AND BESTSELLER LIST-CONQUERING
LADYBIRD BOOKS FOR GROWN-UPS SERIES AS
THE FIRESIDE GROWN-UP GUIDES

The HangoverNEW YORK, June 23, 2016—Touchstone will publish American adaptations of the U.K. publishing series juggernaut, the tongue-firmly-in-cheek Ladybird Books for Grown-Ups in 2016 and 2017. Since their publication in the U.K. last year, the delightfully deadpan and delinquent Ladybird Books for Grown-Ups have all been runaway bestsellers, selling more than 2.5 million combined copies and still topping the U.K.’s bestseller lists. The series’ satirical curriculum is provided by U.K. comedy writers Jason Hazeley and Joel Morris.

Resurrecting Simon & Schuster’s classic self-help imprint Fireside to brand the series, the first four titles— The Fireside Grown-Up Guide to the Hangover, The Fireside Grown-Up Guide to The Husband, The Fireside Grown-Up Guide to The Mom, and The Fireside Grown-Up Guide to Mindfulness—will be published on October 11, 2016. The next four Fireside Grown-Up guides will be published in spring 2017.

These books address the uniquely modern problems facing today’s “Dicks and Janes”—our “Hudsons and Cleos.” What happens when they grow up and aren’t video game animators, or CEOs of a plant-based frozen food empire?  These books are here to offer gentle reassurance.

The Fireside Grown-Up Guides teach adults about the complicated world around them with easy-to-grasp passages, cast in large-type, and paired with color illustrations even the most arrestedly-developed could understand. In The Fireside Grown-Up Guide to the Hangover, adults learn that “Consuming alcohol lowers the body’s reserves of vital elements such as iron, potassium, water and bacon,” while The Fireside Grown-Up Guide to The Mom, gently reminds readers that “The mom does not like hearing her own voice. That is because it sounds like her mom’s.” All of the nostalgic-looking pocket-sized Fireside Grow-Up Guides will be produced in a paper-over-board format.

The Fireside Grown-Up Guides are brilliantly subversive,” said Touchstone Senior Editor Matthew Benjamin. “At first glance, they appear to be perfect gifts for children. At second glance, they quickly disabuse that notion and cause nervous snorting and snickering. At third glance, they induce wild fits of uncontrollable laughter and perspiration.”

Matthew Benjamin acquired U.S. rights for the series from Sarah Scarlett International Rights Director of Penguin UK, publisher of the Ladybird Books for Grown-Ups series.
