NEW YORK, October 24, 2024—Scribner Publisher Nan Graham will transition to a new role within the imprint in 2025, Simon & Schuster CEO Jonathan Karp announced today. The company will begin an open and thorough search for the next Publisher of Scribner.

Ms. Graham joined Simon & Schuster in 1994 as Scribner’s first Editor-in-Chief following Simon & Schuster’s acquisition of Charles Scribner’s Sons. She was named Senior Vice President and Publisher of the imprint in 2012. With the appointment of a new publisher in 2025, Ms. Graham will assume a new role at Scribner, focusing on editing her existing authors and acquiring new titles to enhance Scribner’s list.

Over the past thirty years Ms. Graham has edited Pulitzer Prize winners including All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt, and The Emperor of All Maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee. She has championed many of her authors for decades, including Don DeLillo, Annie Proulx, Rachel Kushner, Jennifer Egan, Colm Tóibín, and Stephen King, with whom she has worked since 1996, helping to establish him among critics and readers as one of the greatest storytellers of all time.

Ms. Graham also edited some of the most transformative and enduring memoirs of our time, including Jeannette Walls’s The Glass Castle and Steve Martin’s Born Standing Up, as well as Hillary Rodham Clinton’s Living History. Publishers Weekly named her one of 25 Book Business Change Makers and in 2011 she received the Maxwell E. Perkins Award, presented by The Center for Fiction.

“Nan’s range as an editor is extraordinary,” said Simon & Schuster CEO Jonathan Karp. “In addition to being a great editor, Nan has been a superb publisher and generous mentor. A revered and integral part of our company, we’ll continue to benefit from Nan’s wisdom and multitudinous gifts in the coming years, and most importantly, so will the new and returning authors she nurtures and champions as only she can.”

“I loved being the Editor-in-Chief of Scribner beginning thirty years ago, and I’ve loved being the Publisher of Scribner, building a superb team that excels in every aspect of publishing,” said Nan Graham. “I’ve been incredibly fortunate to edit my own list of stellar authors and to help launch so many transformative, bestselling, award-winning books from other Scribner editors. I’m proud of making Scribner an imprint where editors, publicists and marketers come of age and thrive, working on behalf of writers who have flourished here. Now it’s time to turn my attention more fully, once again, to the writers I’ve worked with for years, and to finding the occasional writer new to me and to Scribner. I’ll continue to champion the Scribner imprint and our singularly excellent staff and authors.”

Founded in 1846, Scribner is the oldest publishing imprint within Simon & Schuster. It has championed some of the greatest authors in American literary history, including Edith Wharton, Ernest Hemingway, Thomas Wolfe, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. The New York Times Book Review’s list of the “100 Best Books of the 21st Century” included six Scribner titles, four of which were edited by Ms. Graham: Random Family by Adrian Nicole LeBlanc, Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward, The Flamethrowers by Rachel Kushner, Heavy by Kiese Laymon, Far from the Tree by Andrew Solomon, and The Emperor of All Maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee.
