Introducing Simon Element

Simon Element, a new imprint of Simon & Schuster dedicated to books in the lifestyle and practical nonfiction categories, was announced today by Jonathan Karp, Chief Executive Officer of Simon & Schuster.

The imprint will be under the Atria Division and will be led by Richard Rhorer as Vice President and Publisher. Rhorer joined Simon & Schuster ten years ago as Deputy Publisher of the Simon & Schuster imprint where he oversaw the publication of enduring hits in the lifestyle and personal growth categories like Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat by Samin Nosrat, Elements of Style by Erin Gates, The Power of Moments by Chip and Dan Heath, and the recent #1 New York Times bestsellers Think Like a Monk by Jay Shetty and Keep Sharp by Sanjay Gupta.

“Elements are the foundational materials that life is built upon. Our books will provide the information, advice, and inspiration that readers will turn to for personal transformation and a more enriching life,” said Rhorer. “Whether someone wants to prepare a delicious meal, nurture a deeper personal relationship, or adopt healthier habits, Simon Element will have books from authorities with the expertise to guide them on their way.”

The editorial team will be led by Doris Cooper who joins Simon Element as Vice President, Editor in Chief.  Cooper was most recently Editor in Chief of Clarkson Potter where she oversaw a lifestyle list that included bestselling authors such as Chrissy Teigen, Gina Homolka, Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin (The Home Edit), Michiko Kakutani, James Beard Award winners Toni Tipton Martin and Carla Lalli Music, and Melissa Clark and Martha Stewart whom she edited. As a senior editor at William Morrow and later at Touchstone/Fireside, Doris worked with Nikki Giovanni, The New York City Ballet, and the Boston Women’s Health Book Collective.

Other members of the editorial team include Justin Schwartz, Vice President and Executive Editor who joins the imprint from Simon & Schuster. Prior to coming to Simon & Schuster in 2020, Schwartz launched the Whole 30 franchise at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and edited bestsellers from Mark Bittman, Alex Snodgrass of The Defined Dish, The Property Brothers and many other notable voices in the food, home renovation and broader lifestyle categories.

Leah Miller, Executive Editor, comes to Simon Element from Atria. Miller previously held senior editorial positions at Free Press, Harmony Books, Rodale Books, and Grand Central Publishing where she edited bestsellers from esteemed authors across the health and wellness, self-help, and science categories including Bill Nye, Vishen Lakhiani, and Dr. Mike Moreno.

Leah Trouwborst will join the editorial team on May 24 as Senior Editor. Trouwborst was most recently at the Portfolio imprint of Penguin Random House where she acquired and edited multiple New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestsellers, including Ryder Carroll’s The Bullet Journal Method, Julie Zhuo’s The Making of a Manager, Marie Forleo’s Everything Is Figureoutable, and Liz Fosslien and Mollie West Duffy’s No Hard Feelings.

Also on the editorial team is Associate Editor Veronica Alvarado who was most recently with Tiller Press and began her editorial career at Skyhorse Publishing.

Simon Element will publish its inaugural list in Spring 2022. Authors featured on the first list include Dr. Robin Berzin, CEO and founder of Parsley Health; Holly Erickson and Natalie Mortimer, founders of The Modern Proper recipe-based website and social media platform; and Alison Seponara, licensed therapist and creator of the hugely popular @theanxietytherapist Instagram account.

Jonathan Karp said, “Throughout its nearly century long history, Simon & Schuster has published ground-breaking prescriptive nonfiction that transformed readers lives. Simon Element will build on a tradition that includes classics like How to Win Friends and Influence People, The Joy of Cooking, and The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. I’m eager to see the books that Simon Element will add to this rich and enduring library.”
