Stephen Rubin Joins Simon & Schuster as Consulting Publisher

NEW YORK, March 2 – Stephen Rubin has joined Simon & Schuster as a consulting publisher, it was announced today by Jonathan Karp, President and Publisher of Adult Publishing at Simon & Schuster, to whom Mr. Rubin will report.

Over the past 30 years, Mr. Rubin has built one of the most successful track records of any publisher in the book industry. In his years at the helm of Doubleday and Henry Holt, he was integral to the launch of numerous bestsellers, including books by Rick Atkinson, Margaret Atwood, Paul Auster, Dan Brown, Tina Brown, Sebastian Faulks, John Grisham, Ian McEwan, Hilary Mantel, Bill O’Reilly, and Michael Wolff.  Several of those books, including Grisham’s THE FIRM, Brown’s THE DA VINCI CODE, O’Reilly’s KILLING series, and Wolff’s FIRE AND FURY, were among the biggest blockbusters of the decade in which they were published.

Under the exclusive arrangement, Mr. Rubin will acquire fiction and nonfiction for all of the Adult publishing imprints within Simon & Schuster. “Steve has an extraordinary eye for talent and keen judgment as a publisher on both sides of the Atlantic. He’ll be a valuable adviser and a rainmaker,” said Karp. “If anyone can produce a literary monsoon, it’s Steve.”

“Jon and I have had a mutual admiration society since we met more than two decades ago,” said Rubin. “The opportunity to discover and champion notable authors, the great joy of my career, and publish them with Simon & Schuster is a dream come true.  The amazing breadth and depth of the company’s publishing programs, fiction and nonfiction, is mouthwatering for an acquisitive person like myself.”

Mr. Rubin joined Bantam Books in 1984 after a decade-plus career in journalism and as a freelance culture writer and editor for, among others, the New York Times. In 1990, he was named President and Publisher of Doubleday, where he remained until 2009, interrupted by a three-year stint in London as Chairman of Transworld Publishers. In 2009, he became President and Publisher of Henry Holt, where he was Chairman until early 2020.
